Benin, solidarity on the road with WeWard

Starting Dec. 27, every step counts: thanks to the WeWard App you can close the gap on school dropout for 300 children in Benin with Mani Tese.

A virtuous partnership between Mani Tese and WeWard aims to promote healthy lifestyles and combat educational poverty in Benin, where Mani Tese has been present since 1979. In the department of Atacorà, in particular, Mani Tese has developed projects over the years in the area of agriculture, to promote access to sources of drinking water and support for education, with a particular focus on the rights of girls and women.

The partnership with WeWard

WeWard has developed a free App that motivates its users to have a healthy lifestyle and to engage in daily physical activity by walking: the App’s pedometer translates into points (the “Wards”) the distances covered by the user, who can thus obtain various rewards and benefits. To all this, as of last December 27, a solidarity motivation was also added: the App user, in fact, can choose to convert his Wards into a donation in favor of Mani Tese’s project “Let’s give 300 children the means to access education in Benin.” One step after another, it will now be possible to contribute to their education while developing more awareness in Atacora communities about the right to education.

Benin’s educational context

In a country ranked 166th out of 191 on the Human Development Index, guaranteeing the right to education-though enshrined in Benin’s Constitution-inevitably takes a back seat for families who face daily challenges to their livelihoods and survival. In rural areas such as Atacora department, moreover, educational provision is particularly lacking: in 2023, only 65 percent of schoolchildren completed primary education, and more than one in three children under the age of 15 did not attend school at all. Poor awareness of children’s rights by families and communities, in addition to the inadequacy of the child protection system, can only perpetuate this situation over time. Mani Tese’s program aims precisely to address these factors, through greater family involvement, to encourage greater participation in school activities for girls and boys.

Countering school dropout in the department of Atacora

Mani Tese’s project “Let’s Give 300 Children the Means to Access Education in Benin” will directly benefit 300 children between the ages of 10 and 13 in 20 schools in the Atacorà department, who will receive school kits with everything they need to boost their right to education, including even a flashlight to facilitate evening study sessions. Having identified the close correlation between poverty and school dropout rates, the project will also support the families of the 300 children by providing them with roosters and chickens: raising poultry, in fact, requires only minimal infrastructure to ensure food and a stable and secure source of income. Finally, the project will also purchase a motorcycle and cover the cost of fuel for one year, so that educators can reach even the most remote communities and hold awareness meetings there with families about the importance of education for their children, so that their continued participation in school activities is encouraged and supported.

Mani Tese and Soulfood Forestfarms: a new collaboration for agroecological transition and community development

At Milan’s Parco Agricolo Sud in Milan, Mani Tese and Soulfood Forestfarms are joining forces for agroecological transition and strengthening the local community as part of the European Union co-funded “Rebooting the Food System” project.

Within the framework of the European project Rebooting the Food System: Youth Engagement for Agroecology and Due Diligence (2024-2027), a strategic collaboration between Mani Tese and Soulfood Forestfarms has been launched in the context of the South Milan Agricultural Park. The goal is to promoteregenerative agroforestry, inspired by the principles of ecological succession, to regenerate agricultural territories and build sustainable communities through the enhancement of the agroforestry system planted in 2019 by SoulFood ForesFarms and CasciNet AgroHub and the Adopt A Hen project, which started in 2023, thanks to which today 160 hens adopted by the local community live on the fields – according to the principles of rational grazing – and go to the fields every Sunday to collect their eggs.

The collaboration, strengthened by the support of the Degree Course in Geography, Environment and Territory of theUniversity of Milan, aims to give new vitality to the local community by fostering the active participation of citizens through practical activities and moments of awareness. The intent is to stimulate dialogue between the people who live in the neighborhood and those who occasionally live there, creating connections that can generate a lasting impact on the area.

This initiative is part of the European project Rebooting the Food System, which aims to promote more equitable and sustainable agricultural practices by focusing on climate justice, environmental protection and building resilient food systems. A key aspect is the active involvement of young people, who through educational pathways and hands-on activities can acquire tools to become protagonists of concrete change.

This collaboration is crucial to strengthening the agroecological transition, not only in international cooperation contexts, but also at the local level. Putting conscious consumption at the center means recognizing its transformative power, capable of affecting not only production systems, but also economic and financial models, making them more equitable and sustainable.

Soulfood ForestFarms deals with the design and implementation of Agroforestry Systems. All of these systems are conceived and designed following patterns that Nature has chosen to be successful in its goals. When we talk about Agroforestry we are talking about Communities: plants are chosen with the aim of achieving very dense rows and in such a way that species support each other. There are numerous Ecosystem Services and ecological functions that plants fulfill for local Communities: from the simple production of oxygen to the more refined influence it has in decreasing the stress rate of people. For the SFFF reality, it is crucial to create support networks with related realities, creating distributed, solid and transparent links with the common intent of working for ecological transition.

The first planned activities concern two key areas:

The upgrading of the community chicken coop, an intervention that aims to improve and expand the existing facilities within the “Adopt a Hen” project, already active at Soulfood Forestfarms. This initiative has created the first neighborhood chicken coop in Milan, located in the Urban Agroforest of Vettabbia Park, and allows citizens to adopt a chicken, contributing to its ethical and sustainable breeding. The expansion of the chicken coop will improve resource and facility management, ensure optimal conditions for the animals, and expand local community involvement, strengthening the connection between production and conscious consumption.
Strengthening the local community, through moments of aggregation and awareness raising. The collaboration will be developed around meetings dedicated to discussing key issues such as food sovereignty, sustainable supply chains and environmental justice, with a look that combines the experiences of the Global South with agroecological practices developed in the European context. Mani Tese has been working for years in countries of the Global South so that global financial flows contribute to sustainable development, ensuring that resources are used to strengthen the rights of local communities and build more just and resilient economies.

At the heart of this collaboration is the dialogue betweenregenerative agroforestry, promoted by Soulfood Forestfarms, and agroecological transition, carried out by Mani Tese. Two complementary approaches coming together to build agricultural models that can respond to the environmental, social and economic challenges of our time.

Soulfood Forestfarms represents a concrete example of how agroecology can be not only a farming method, but also a tool for environmental and social regeneration. Through the direct involvement of citizens, the initiative aims to create connections between people and the land, stimulating greater awareness of sustainable agricultural practices and their impact on collective well-being.

This collaboration is part of Mani Tese’s broader commitment to equitable and sustainable agriculture that puts social and environmental justice at the center. Further initiatives will be activated in the coming months to consolidate this path and expand local community involvement.

La via per l’emancipazione socio-economica delle “manjaca”

Reportage dalla Guinea Bissau: ecco come Mani Tese punta su micro-credito e nuovi gruppi di risparmio al femminile, nell’ambito del progetto “Coinvolgiamo tuttə per costruire il nostro futuro”, co-finanziato da AICS

Frontiere politiche, barriere culturali

Nei primi anni Novanta, l’intensificarsi degli scontri armati tra l’esercito senegalese e gli indipendentisti della provincia della Casamance, al confine tra Senegal e Guinea Bissau, ha portato all’abbandono di molti villaggi del lato senegalese, la cui popolazione si è rifugiata in Guinea-Bissau.

Situato a 3 chilometri da São Domingos, a nord della Guinea-Bissau, Beguingue 2 è un villaggio fondato nel 1994 da rifugiati senegalesi sulle terre di Beguingue 1, con il sostegno dell’UNHCR e del governo guineano. Oggi, il villaggio è abitato principalmente dal gruppo etnico manjaco proveniente dal villaggio di Nhafena, in Casamance, ma in realtà originario della stessa Guinea-Bissau.

Quello manjaco è un gruppo etnico caratterizzato da forti valori religioso-tradizionali, che presenta una società patriarcale, nella quale le donne permangono in un rapporto di subordinazione e dipendenza. Per esempio, le donne manjaca non hanno il diritto di ereditare né dal padre né dal marito. In via eccezionale, una figlia può ereditare alcune delle proprietà acquisite dalla madre nel corso della sua vita.

Solo recentemente, le manjaca hanno acquisito il diritto all’istruzione, ma continuano a essere relegate alle faccende domestiche e ai lavori agricoli, dedicandosi al piccolo commercio o altre attività generatrice di reddito che devono però essere approvate dal marito.

L’emancipazione socio-culturale passa da quella economica. In questo senso, l’intervento di Mani Tese nel territorio di São Domingos, regione di Cacheu, mira a creare 10 nuovi gruppi di risparmio e (micro)credito – in inglese Village Savings and Loaning Groups (VSLG) – grazie al progetto Coinvolgiamo tuttə per costruire il nostro futuro: Politiche, formazione e lavoro per un business inclusivo!, co-finanziato dall’Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (AICS).

Un libretto per l’emancipazione economica

I gruppi VSL costituiscono una sorta di cassa di risparmio comunitaria, di solito composti a maggioranza da donne che possono così gestire in autonomia i propri guadagni e richiedere prestiti per svolgere delle attività generatrici di reddito senza dover ricorrere all’approvazione dei propri mariti, padri o fratelli.

Dallo scorso febbraio, Mani Tese sta formando i nuovi gruppi che riceveranno un fondo dal progetto per attivare il meccanismo di risparmio/prestiti, garantendo quindi l’autoalimentarsi della cassa del gruppo e la sua sostenibilità.

Nella comunità di Biguinge 2, la formazione si svolge, come di consueto, all’ombra di un grande mango, in prossimità della lingua d’asfalto rosicchiata e piena di buche che conduce fino alla frontiera con il Senegal e la Casamance. Nell’afa del primo pomeriggio, le donne manjaca del gruppo VSL denominato “No djubi” (letteralmente “vediamo”, nel senso di “vediamo come va l’esperienza…”), un po’ assonnate e provate dalla mattinata di lavoro nei campi o al mercato, ascoltano l’animatrice di Mani Tese, mama Zanda, che illustra il funzionamento della cassa, lo statuto del gruppo e il ruolo dei membri del comitato di gestione.

Per rendere la formazione più dinamica, l’animatrice fa degli esempi pratici mostrando il kit che ogni gruppo VSL ha ricevuto in dotazione: una cassaforte portatile, libretti di risparmio, sacchetti di stoffa (per i diversi “fondi” della cassa), calcolatrice, quaderni e timbri.

La pila di libretti gialli si erge sul tavolino al centro del cerchio di vesti e copricapi colorati delle manjaca. Ognuna riceverà un libretto sul quale saranno timbrate le “azioni” corrispondenti ai franchi depositati. Un timbro per ogni 500 franchi. Più timbri significano più azioni, ovvero una fetta di guadagno maggiore all’apertura della cassa di fine anno, quando verranno ripartiti i tassi di interesse (juros) accumulati dal gruppo. Ma risparmiare di più permette anche di richiedere prestiti più alti, secondo la proporzione 1:3. Per esempio, se risparmi 10.000 franchi, puoi chiedere un prestito di 30.000 franchi.

L’attenzione generale si ridesta quando si passa alla prova del risparmio. Una per una, le manjaca del “No djubi” vengono chiamate per depositare i loro risparmi della settimana nella ciotolina preposta. Gli animi si scaldano, il tono delle voci si alza, causando un po’ di confusione tra le due contabili incaricate di ricevere i franchi, contarli e annunciarli al resto del gruppo. Mama Zanda è brava a riportare l’ordine, servendosi di qualche barzelletta che fa scuotere dalle risate le donne più corpulente.

L’importo minimo da depositare è di 500 franchi, ma non è sempre obbligatorio risparmiare, dipende dalla disponibilità del momento. Per cominciare a richiedere prestiti, invece, bisognerà attendere l’erogazione del fondo da parte di Mani Tese, al termine del ciclo di formazioni.

Tre donne e una cassaforte

“Sono figlia di questa comunità”, afferma con orgoglio Aminata Mendes, 24 anni, riferendosi a Beguingue 2. Non è ancora sposata ed è una delle poche ragazze della sua comunità iscritta al dodicesimo anno di scuola, equivalente al nostro ultimo anno di superiori. “Nella comunità non tutte le ragazze frequentano la scuola, a volte i genitori non le lasciano andare anche a causa della povertà.” Per il suo livello di istruzione e le sue capacità – durante la formazione era una delle più partecipi e ricettive – il gruppo “No djubi” l’ha scelta come una delle due contabili.

Aminata è determinata a studiare medicina, risparmiando i soldi che guadagna lavorando la terra durante la stagione delle piogge e chiedendo prestiti dalla cassa del gruppo per pagarsi gli studi a Bissau. “Sento la vocazione dentro di me, voglio dedicare la mia vita per questo.” A differenza di molti giovani della sua età, lei non intende emigrare. “Sono orgogliosa di restare a lavorare nella mia terra.” Quando sarà un medico affermato, desidera aiutare la sua gente costruendo una scuola nella comunità.

La leader e presidente del gruppo “No djubi”, Eli Mendes, 42 anni, è sposata e ha 6 figli. Come la maggior parte delle donne del gruppo, anche lei lavora la terra e vende i suoi prodotti al mercato di São Domingos. Con suo marito, divide un campo di anacardi. “Lui è contento che io faccia parte di questo gruppo. Avevo sentito da altre comunità vicine che già avevano una cassa di risparmio così, allora ho manifestato il nostro interesse a Mani Tese.” Con i soldi che riuscirà a risparmiare, Eli vuole comprarsi delle cose per sé, dei terreni da lasciare alla figlia che secondo la tradizione manjaca potrà ereditare solamente quanto appartenuto alla madre.

Isaura Gomes, 30 anni, è originaria di Caio, nella regione di Cacheu. Nel 1997, tre anni dopo la fondazione del villaggio Beguingue 2, dove sono stati reinsediati i rifugiati senegalesi in Guinea Bissau, la piccola Isaura ha raggiunto la zia che già viveva nel villaggio. In seguito, ha sposato un giovane manjaco con cui ha avuto 5 figli.

L’anno scorso, suo marito è morto dopo una lunga malattia. Faceva l’autista del trasporto pubblico. L’auto che usava nel suo lavoro è stata venduta dai fratelli del marito, teoricamente per sostenere le spese di Isaura e dei suoi figli, rimasti orfani di padre.

In precedenza, suo marito aveva ereditato un campo di anacardi dal padre e ne aveva un altro che condivideva con suo fratello. Al momento, però, sono i fratelli e la famiglia del suo defunto marito a gestire questi campi. Isaura non può rivendicare alcun diritto di eredità e resta esclusa dalla gestione dei campi. Durante la raccolta degli anacardi, viene impiegata come semplice raccoglitrice e viene pagata in percentuale sulla quantità raccolta.

“Continuerò a lottare per la mia sopravvivenza e quella dei miei figli, per questo mi sono iscritta al programma di risparmio e micro-credito della comunità, in modo da avere l’opportunità di beneficiare di finanziamenti per le attività agricole e per la piccola impresa di prodotti locali che intendo avviare”, dichiara Isaura. “Questo mi aiuterà a non perdere la mia dignità e ad affermarmi tra le donne di Beguingue 2.”

The path to socio-economic empowerment of “manjacas”

Reportage from Guinea Bissau: Here’s how Mani Tese focuses on micro-credit and new women’s savings groups, as part of the project “Involve Allə to Build Our Future,” co-funded by AICS

Political borders, cultural barriers

In the early 1990s, escalating armed clashes between the Senegalese army and independence fighters in Casamance province, on the border between Senegal and Guinea Bissau, led to the abandonment of many villages on the Senegalese side, whose people fled to Guinea-Bissau.

Located 3 kilometers from São Domingos in northern Guinea-Bissau, Beguingue 2 is a village founded in 1994 by Senegalese refugees on the land of Beguingue 1, with the support of UNHCR and the Guinean government. Today, the village is mainly inhabited by the Manjaco ethnic group from the village of Nhafena in Casamance, but actually originating from Guinea-Bissau itself.

The Manjaca is an ethnic group characterized by strong religious-traditional values, presenting a patriarchal society in which women remain in a subordinate and dependent relationship. For example, Manjaca women do not have the right to inherit from either their father or husband. Exceptionally, a daughter may inherit some of the property acquired by her mother during her lifetime.

Only recently, manjacas have acquired the right to education, but they continue to be relegated to household chores and agricultural work, engaging in petty trade or other income-generating activities that must, however, be approved by their husbands.

Socio-cultural empowerment passes through economic empowerment. In this sense, Mani Tese’s intervention in the territory of São Domingos, Cacheu region, aims to create 10 new savings and (micro)credit groups – in English Village Savings and Loaning Groups (VSLG) – thanks to the project Involviamo tuttəper costruire il nostro futuro: Policies, training and work for an inclusive business!, co-funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).

A booklet for economic empowerment

VSL groups constitute a kind of community savings bank, usually composed mostly of women who can thus manage their earnings independently and take out loans to carry out income-generating activities without having to rely on the approval of their husbands, fathers or brothers.

Since last February, Mani Tese has been training new groups that will receive a fund from the project to activate the savings/loan mechanism, thus ensuring the group’s cash self-support and sustainability.

In the Biguinge 2 community, training takes place, as usual, in the shade of a large mango tree, near the gnawed and pothole-filled asphalt tongue that leads up to the border with Senegal and Casamance. In the early afternoon sultriness, the Manjaca women of the VSL group called “No djubi” (literally “let’s see,” meaning “let’s see how the experience goes…”), somewhat sleepy and rehearsed from the morning’s work in the fields or at the market, listen to Mani Tese animator Mama Zanda explain how the cash box works, the group’s bylaws, and the role of the members of the management committee.

To make the training more dynamic, the facilitator gives practical examples by showing the kit that each VSL group was given: a portable safe, savings books, cloth bags (for different “funds” in the cash register), calculator, notebooks and stamps.

The stack of yellow booklets stands on the small table in the center of the manjacas‘ circle of colorful robes and headdresses. Each will receive a booklet on which the “shares” corresponding to the francs deposited will be stamped. One stamp for every 500 francs. More stamps mean more shares, meaning a bigger slice of earnings at the opening of the year-end cash box, when the interest rates(juros) accumulated by the group will be apportioned. But saving more also allows you to borrow more, according to the 1:3 ratio. For example, if you save 10,000 francs, you can borrow 30,000 francs.

General attention is reawakened when the savings test comes around. One by one, the manjacas of the “No djubi” are called to deposit their savings for the week in the small bowl provided. Tempers flare, the tone of voices rises, causing some confusion among the two accountants in charge of receiving the francs, counting them and announcing them to the rest of the group. Mama Zanda is good at restoring order, serving up a few jokes that make the burlier women shake with laughter.

The minimum amount to deposit is 500 francs, but it is not always mandatory to save, depending on the availability of the moment. To start applying for loans, however, you will have to wait for the fund to be disbursed by Mani Tese after the training cycle is completed.

Three women and a safe

“I am a daughter of this community,” says Aminata Mendes, 24, proudly, referring to Beguingue 2. She is not yet married and is one of the few girls in her community enrolled in 12th grade, equivalent to our last year of high school. “In the community not all girls attend school, sometimes their parents don’t let them go also because of poverty.” Because of her level of education and her abilities-during the training she was one of the most participatory and receptive-the “No djubi” group chose her as one of the two accountants.

Aminata is determined to study medicine, saving the money she earns by working the land during the rainy season and borrowing from the group’s treasury to pay for her studies in Bissau. “I feel the calling inside me, I want to dedicate my life to it.” Unlike many young people her age, she does not plan to emigrate. “I am proud to stay and work in my homeland.” When she is an established doctor, she wants to help her people by building a school in the community.

The leader and president of the “No djubi” group, Eli Mendes, 42, is married and has six children. Like most of the women in the group, she works the land and sells her produce at the market in São Domingos. With her husband, she shares a cashew field. “He is happy that I am part of this group. I had heard from other nearby communities that they already had a savings bank like this, so I expressed our interest to Mani Tese.” With the money he is able to save, Eli wants to buy things for himself, land to leave to his daughter who, according to Manjaca tradition, can only inherit what belonged to her mother.

Isaura Gomes, 30, is originally from Caio in the Cacheu region. In 1997, three years after the founding of Beguingue 2 village, where Senegalese refugees in Guinea Bissau were resettled, little Isaura joined her aunt who was already living in the village. She later married a young manjaco with whom she had five children.

Last year, her husband died after a long illness. He was a public transportation driver. The car she used in her job was sold by her husband’s siblings, theoretically to support the expenses of Isaura and her fatherless children.

Previously, her husband had inherited a cashew field from his father and had another field that he shared with his brother. At present, however, it is her late husband’s brothers and family who manage these fields. Isaura cannot claim any inheritance rights and remains excluded from managing the fields. During the cashew harvest, she is employed as a simple picker and is paid a percentage of the quantity harvested.

“I will continue to fight for my survival and that of my children, which is why I have enrolled in the community savings and micro-credit program so that I will have the opportunity to qualify for funding for the agricultural and small local produce business I plan to start,” Isaura says. “This will help me not to lose my dignity and establish myself among the women of Beguingue 2.”

Un Indice di Giustizia Ambientale, per affrontare le disuguaglianze e promuovere l’equità globale

Mani Tese pubblica il rapporto “Environmental Global Index – Una mappa globale della Giustizia Ambientale”, realizzato con il contributo di Fondazione Cariplo e in collaborazione con Università degli Studi di Milano, Politecnico di Milano ed eNextGen

Fin dal 2012, Mani Tese è impegnata attivamente in un lavoro di studio e ricerca sul tema della giustizia ambientale, un argomento di vasta portata e ampiamente dibattuto, le cui radici affondano nella seconda metà del Novecento. Tuttavia, è stato solo nel nuovo millennio che il legame tra giustizia ambientale e sociale ha iniziato a emergere in modo più solido ed evidente, soprattutto dopo l’appuntamento di Kyoto nel 2005. In quel periodo, infatti, l’ampia disparità tra i Paesi del Nord e del Sud del Mondo è diventata una questione centrale, poiché si è reso necessario affrontare la relazione tra le responsabilità storiche, le capacità di azione e gli impatti a lungo termine.

La creazione di un Indice di Giustizia Ambientale (per accedere alla piattaforma clicca qui), e la pubblicazione del primo rapporto periodico dedicato, rappresentano il culmine di un processo complesso e articolato, che ha visto Mani Tese intrecciare rapporti con istituzioni accademiche (Università degli Studi di Milano e Politecnico di Milano) e realtà scientifiche innovative come eNextGen (spinoff del Politecnico di Milano), grazie al fondamentale contributo di Fondazione Cariplo che, fin da subito, ha creduto nel progetto. Questo percorso ha incluso l’identificazione di indicatori appropriati, provenienti da fonti affidabili e open source, supportati da evidenze scientifiche riconosciute; l’analisi degli stessi, attraverso una metodologia volta a garantire la validità e la rilevanza delle informazioni raccolte; la revisione e l’aggiornamento costante degli indicatori per permettere un calcolo valido, quindi per garantire che l’indice rifletta in modo dinamico l’evoluzione delle problematiche ambientali, nonché le esigenze di interpretazione e aggiornamento nel corso del tempo.

L’intento è stato quello di stimolare un dibattito costruttivo e propositivo intorno al tema delle disuguaglianze ambientali, a livello globale e locale. L’approccio scientifico e rigoroso, unito a una comunicazione chiara e accessibile, si è proposto di offrire uno strumento per monitorare e influenzare politiche ambientali più giuste e sostenibili. In questo senso, pertanto, va inquadrata la scelta di dedicare un’intera sezione del Rapporto a un approfondimento sulla filiera del tessile, settore caratterizzato da gravi fenomeni di ingiustizia ambientale e sociale, con la presentazione di alcuni casi-studio emblematici, che dimostrano, invece, come sia effettivamente possibile un modello di “fare impresa” capace di guardare al cambiamento, all’innovazione e ai processi trasformativi.

Il primo rapporto di Mani Tese sulla Giustizia Ambientale

An Environmental Justice Index, to address inequalities and promote global equity

Mani Tese publishes the report “Environmental Global Index – A Global Map of Environmental Justice,” produced with the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo and in collaboration with Università degli Studi di Milano, Politecnico di Milano and eNextGen

Since 2012, Mani Tese has been actively engaged in study and research work on the issue of environmental justice, a far-reaching and widely debated topic whose roots go back to the second half of the twentieth century. However, it was only in the new millennium that the link between environmental and social justice began to emerge more solidly and clearly, especially after the Kyoto meeting in 2005. Indeed, at that time, the wide disparity between countries of the Global North and South became a central issue, as the relationship between historical responsibilities, capacities for action, and long-term impacts had to be addressed.

The creation of an Environmental Justice Index (to access the platform click here), and the publication of the first dedicated periodic report, represent the culmination of a complex and articulated process, which has seen Mani Tese weave relationships with academic institutions (University of Milan and Milan Polytechnic) and innovative scientific realities such as eNextGen (a spinoff of the Milan Polytechnic), thanks to the fundamental contribution of Fondazione Cariplo, which, from the outset, believed in the project. This path included the identification of appropriate indicators, from reliable and open source sources, supported by recognized scientific evidence; the analysis of the same, through a methodology designed to ensure the validity and relevance of the information collected; and the constant revision and updating of the indicators to allow a valid calculation, thus to ensure that the index dynamically reflects the evolution of environmental issues, as well as the needs for interpretation and updating over time.

The intent was to stimulate constructive and purposeful debate around the issue of environmental inequalities, globally and locally. The scientific and rigorous approach, combined with clear and accessible communication, aimed to offer a tool to monitor and influence more just and sustainable environmental policies. In this sense, therefore, should be framed the decision to devote an entire section of the Report to an in-depth study of the textile supply chain, a sector characterized by serious phenomena of environmental and social injustice, with the presentation of some emblematic case-studies, which demonstrate, instead, how it is indeed possible a model of “doing business” capable of looking at change, innovation and transformative processes.

Circular Economy Project for Youth

This Saturday, March 15, 2025, the youth circular economy project “Arti con Mani” kicks off.

Thanks to the collaboration between Libera Compagnia di Arti e Mestieri Sociali and Mani Tese, a group of high school youths will be able to participate in a workshop to sort and sort second-hand goods for sale in the fair-trade second-hand market run by Cooperativa Sociale Mani Tese Onlus (Gorgonzola office at Via Giuseppe Parini, 60).

The idea was born during a group work carried out by the very volunteers from Libera Compagnia di Arti e Mestieri Sociali and Mani Tese, as part of their training for Universal Civil Service.

The project, consisting of five appointments to be held on Saturdays, aims to allow boys and girls to get to know a volunteer reality in their area, learn how to value second-hand items of various types to put them back into circulation, work in teams, socialize, mature responsibility and autonomy, as well as find new stimuli for recreational activities.

We hope that this initiative will not only raise awareness of environmental, social and economic sustainability issues among the younger generation, thus helping to create a more aware and inclusive community, but also provide them with a personally enriching hands-on experience.

Empowerment femminile, dalle statistiche globali alle esperienze locali

Partecipazione economica e opportunità, livello di istruzione, salute e sopravvivenza, empowerment politico: il nostro impegno in India con le organizzazioni Save e Fedina contro le disuguaglianze di genere.

L’ultimo rapporto Global Gender Gap pubblicato dal World Economic Forum evidenzia un triste dato statistico: il divario di genere globale nel 2023 era del 68,4%, nel 2024 68,5%, una crescita a un ritmo glaciale che non fa ben sperare circa il raggiungimento degli obiettivi fissati per il 2030, sebbene esistano esempi decisamente positivi, come l’Islanda, che, con i suoi 396 187 abitanti, ottiene un fantastico primato con il 93,5%. Dobbiamo, per contro, constatare un’Italia ancora sottotono, 69,2%, nonostante abbia registrato uno dei progressi più significativi dal 2010, con un aumento di 15,9 punti percentuali. Rispetto all’educazione e formazione, solo un terzo sceglie materie scientifiche: il rapporto fra specialisti ICT è 1 donna su 6. E le donne guadagnano quasi il 20% in meno degli uomini. Ci vorranno 134 anni per raggiungere la piena parità, sottolinea il rapporto del World Economic Forum.

Le diseguaglianze di genere in India

Espandendo lo sguardo oltre i confini europei e concentrandosi su uno dei Paesi che ha registrato una notevole crescita economica negli ultimi anni, ma che allo stesso tempo affronta crescenti disuguaglianze sociali, emerge un quadro complesso. L’India, infatti, si posiziona al 129° posto su 146 Paesi nel Global Gender Gap Index, e, nonostante alcuni progressi apparenti in alcuni settori, la disuguaglianza di genere rimane una questione centrale. Il Global Gender Gap Index, è una misura sintetica che raccoglie informazioni da quattro aree principali: partecipazione economica e opportunità, livello di istruzione, salute e sopravvivenza, e empowerment politico. Ogni area è composta da più indicatori specifici. Il punteggio dell’indice va da 0 a 1, dove 1 rappresenta la parità totale tra i generi. Tuttavia, è importante sottolineare che questo indice si concentra sulle differenze di genere, mettendo in evidenza la posizione relativa delle donne rispetto agli uomini, piuttosto che una valutazione assoluta delle loro condizioni.

In India, quasi il 90% della forza lavoro è impiegata nel settore informale, dove le donne, in particolare, si trovano a fronteggiare enormi difficoltà. Questa situazione è alimentata da un profondo squilibrio nelle relazioni di potere che caratterizzano il mondo del lavoro. L’asimmetria di potere tra datori di lavoro e lavoratrici ha un impatto diretto sull’accesso delle donne a condizioni di lavoro dignitose e sulla loro capacità di mantenerle, creando una barriera invisibile ma solida che ostacola ogni tipo di progressione sociale ed economica. Le donne nel settore informale sono, infatti, tra le più vulnerabili: spesso non hanno accesso a contratti ufficiali, diritti lavorativi garantiti o protezioni legali. Non solo sono escluse dai benefici delle politiche di welfare, ma sono anche privi di potere contrattuale, il che le espone a forme di sfruttamento quotidiano, abuso e discriminazione. Questo scenario perpetua un ciclo di povertà, disuguaglianza e marginalizzazione che, con il passare del tempo, diventa sempre più difficile da interrompere. Il mondo del tessile, ad esempio, tanto esplorato in più circostanze da Mani Tese, storicamente, ha visto un’alta partecipazione femminile, e sebbene in contesti diversi, continuano a essere le principali protagoniste di un mercato profondamente segnato da dinamiche di sfruttamento e disuguaglianza.

Il lavoro di Mani Tese con le organizzazioni locali Save e Fedina

L’India sta affrontando una crisi di disuguaglianza di genere che va ben oltre le difficoltà nel mondo del lavoro. Un divario che si amplifica in modo drammatico man mano che si scende con l’età delle ragazze, creando un ciclo di svantaggi che colpisce profondamente la società su più fronti. “In risposta a questa crescente problematica, grazie al lavoro comune con le organizzazioni locali SAVE e FEDINA, operiamo per ridurre le disuguaglianze e migliorare la condizione delle donne, soprattutto nelle fasce più vulnerabili”. Si tratta di promuovere e implementare un approccio che prevede l’integrazione dell’empowerment femminile in tutte le politiche economiche, sociali e culturali, con l’obiettivo di promuovere un cambiamento che vada oltre la mera creazione di opportunità di lavoro. Questo approccio prevede una riconsiderazione delle strutture di potere, al fine di garantire che le donne dispongano degli strumenti necessari per negoziare migliori condizioni lavorative, affrontare le barriere socio-culturali e costruire una rete di supporto in grado di aiutarle a superare le difficoltà legate alla discriminazione e alla disuguaglianza. “L’obiettivo è fornire strumenti concreti per abbattere le barriere e permettere alle donne di esercitare il proprio potere economico, sociale e politico, contribuendo così in modo decisivo al progresso collettivo”.
