A commitment to justice, since 45 years
Since 1964 Mani Tese has been committed to fighting world hunger and the imbalances between North and South of the world, working together with the people of the poorest areas of the world.
The organisation is active in 14 Countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, implementing integrated development programmes involving local communities in each phase of the project and empowering them so that they may carry on their social and economic development tread autonomously.
Mani Tese is well aware that behaviours and politics in the North of the world influence the condition of poverty in the South; this is why it also promotes in Italy a substantial effort of information and awareness on the issues of development and economic and social justice. All of Mani Tese’s activities respect and promote the principles of sustainability, in the environmental, social, economic and cultural dimensions.
Mani Tese is an Association recognised as Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) and as Non Profit Organisation (ONLUS). Since 1981 it has been declared a public utility body, and since 1997 it enjoys the consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The national secretariat is located in Milan. There are 35 groups of volunteers scattered around Italy, all involved in fostering an economy of solidarity and justice. From some of these groups have been born out the 5 local associations (Firenze, Campania, Sicilia, Faenza and Pratrivero), which share with the national organisation both the strategy and the planning. Moreover, with the social cooperative, Mani Tese promotes and carries out all over Italy the recycle, the recovery and the reuse of used goods.
Within Mani Tese, the CRES (Centre for Research and Devlopment Education) is in charge of the activities concerning development education for both teachers and students, building and organic and constructive relation with the schools through practical suggestions of cultural and didactic innovation.
Since 2002, through the CRBM (Campaign for the Reform of the World Bank), there is a specific Mani Tese’s programme focused on the democratisation and a deep environmental and social reform of international financial institutions. The Campaign pays particular attention to the impact that public and private investments by the North have on the South, as far as the environmental, social, development and human rights sectors are concerned, in solidarity with the local communities which experience at first hand such consequences, and within a number of networks of the international civil society.
Mani Tese is one of the founding members of Banca Etica; it is a member of the Italian NGOs Association and it adheres to the Italian Donation Institute.
